A $241 million solar energy project that would power about 18,400 homes received county planning approval and is rushing to complete permitting before federal tax credits expire in 2028.
- The Kūihelani Solar Phase 2 project received 7-0 approval from Maui Planning Commission for a special use permit.
- The project would generate 40 megawatts of solar power and meet nearly 10% of Maui County’s electricity needs.
- Construction is expected to create 1,541 jobs and $90 million in labor income for local workers.
- The company must complete construction by end of 2028 to qualify for federal tax credits or the project won’t be financially viable.
- This follows the successful Phase 1 project which currently supplies about 15% of Maui’s electrical needs.
