Maui County completed a major sidewalk and railing restoration project along Front Street in Lahaina, celebrated with a formal blessing attended by about 150 residents and local officials. The project is part of the broader effort to restore commercial activity to the fire-devastated town.
- The restored Front Street walkway covers 1,450 feet of repaired sidewalk and 700 feet of new railing along the 700 block, from Lahainaluna Road to Dickenson Street.
- Five commercial building permits have been issued in Lahaina town, with one already under construction and over 12 properties in pre-application consultation.
- Mayor Bissen noted that more than 1,500 properties have been cleared and essential infrastructure restored as part of the ongoing recovery effort.
- Permitting in Lahaina’s Historic District remains one of the most complex processes in Hawaii, governed by national, state, and local regulations.
- The project also included new light poles, benches, bike racks, and landscaping, completing work that originated from a 2015 community-input plan.
