The Hawaii Department of Health has detected elevated fecal bacteria levels at Hanakaʻōʻō Beach in Lahaina, advising against swimming until levels drop below the safety threshold. The advisory remains in effect until retesting confirms contamination has subsided.
- Enterococci bacteria measured at 406 per 100mL — more than three times the 130 per 100mL safety threshold — triggering the advisory.
- Swimming in the affected water may cause gastroenteritis, and ear, eye, nose, and throat infections, with children, elderly, and immunocompromised individuals at greatest risk.
- The advisory will stay in place until follow-up water samples consistently fall below the 130 per 100mL threshold.
- Property owners with guests staying nearby should be aware that Hanakaʻōʻō Beach is currently not recommended for swimming.
