The Maui Nui Visitor Aloha Society of Hawaiʻi is recruiting volunteers to educate beachgoers about ocean hazards at unguarded Maui beaches. The program is funded by the Hawaiʻi Tourism Authority and runs in partnership with Maui County Fire and Public Safety.
- Aloha Kai Safety Ambassadors will station volunteers at high-risk unguarded beaches to warn visitors about dangerous ocean conditions.
- The program follows the May 2026 deaths of two visitors at unguarded Wailea Beach and growing scrutiny of Maui’s limited lifeguard coverage — only 12 towers for dozens of popular beaches.
- Maui recorded 207 fatal ocean drownings between 2015 and 2024, with the vast majority being visitors.
- Volunteers serve as educators only — no water rescue duties — and will receive training from Maui Fire Department Ocean Safety personnel.
- The first outreach day is August 10 at Napili Bay; interested residents can contact Alexandra Witkin at assistance@anchorandally.net or 808-264-4773.
