Maui County’s Department of Public Works is closing both lanes of Makawao Avenue on select weekends through Aug. 23 for Phase 3 of a road reconstruction project. Weekday single-lane closures also continue during work hours.
- Full weekend road closures (6 a.m. Saturday to 6:30 p.m. Sunday) affect Makawao Avenue between Makani Road and Maha Road on Aug. 8–9, and Aug. 15–16.
- The Aug. 1–2 closure was postponed due to rain and will not take place; revised closures now run Aug. 8 through Aug. 23.
- Weekday construction continues Monday–Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. with single-lane closures between Apana Road and Ai Street.
- The full 1.8-mile Makawao Avenue Reconstruction project began October 2025 and is expected to be completed in February 2027.
- Guests and owners traveling through Makawao town should plan for delays and follow posted detour routes on affected weekends.
