A Maui County Council committee recessed without voting on two resolutions that would rezone additional apartment-district properties into hotel districts, continuing the process of carving out exceptions to Bill 9’s vacation rental phase-out. The committee will resume testimony on August 19.
- The two paused resolutions (26-129 and 26-130) are part of a four-measure effort that would collectively move about 2,554 apartment-zoned units onto a path toward permanent hotel zoning.
- The rezoning measures implement exceptions to Ordinance 5909 (Bill 9), which phases out transient vacation rentals in apartment districts starting Jan. 1, 2029 for West Maui and Jan. 1, 2031 for the rest of Maui County.
- Resolution 26-129 targets eight properties within a sea level rise exposure area; Resolution 26-130 covers two properties, including the fire-destroyed Makai Sunset Inn in Lahaina.
- The Makai Sunset Inn owners want to preserve hotel zoning rights before deciding whether to rebuild the property destroyed in the August 2023 wildfires.
- The committee will reconvene for continued public testimony at 9 a.m. on August 19.
