Multiple sources including Maui County and Maui Now report that Hurricane Lowell’s impacts triggered widespread road closures across Maui beginning the evening of September 7 and into September 8, 2026. High surf and debris on roadways forced closures on several major routes in Kihei, Lahaina, and along the West Maui coastline.
- Front Street is closed from Kapunakea Street northbound to Honoapiʻilani Highway in both directions due to storm impacts.
- South Kihei Road has been closed in multiple segments due to high surf debris, with the closure zone updated several times overnight and ultimately extended between Alahele Place and Ohukai Road.
- North Kihei Road is closed between Honoapiʻilani Highway and South Kihei Road.
- Honoapiʻilani Highway is partially closed northbound (Lahaina direction) from Kapoli Street in Māʻalaea to Ehehene Street in Ukumehame due to debris on the roadway.
- Rocks and debris were initially reported on Honoapiʻilani Highway between mile markers 11 and 13 near Papalaua Beach Park and Ukumehame as early as 10:37 p.m. on September 7. (Maui Now)
