Hawaiian Electric has installed the first six of 54 Tesla Megapack battery units at its Waena facility in Central Maui, part of a 40MW grid-scale energy storage system. The project is expected to be operational in 2027 and aims to improve grid stability and support renewable energy use.
- The Waena Battery Energy Storage System will be one of Hawaii’s largest, with a 40MW/160MWh capacity using 54 Tesla Megapack units.
- The project is Maui’s first standalone load-shifting battery system, designed to store solar and wind energy for use during peak evening demand.
- Grid-forming technology included in the system will help stabilize the island’s electrical grid as renewable energy use increases.
- Maui currently gets about 41% of its electricity from renewables; the project supports Hawaiian Electric’s goal of 100% renewable generation by 2045.
- Remaining battery units will be delivered in phases over the coming months, with the full system expected to enter service in 2027.
