The Maui Metropolitan Planning Organization is requesting community feedback on proposed transportation projects eligible for federal funding. The most significant proposal is a $200 million extension of the Lahaina Bypass that would connect directly to Kāʻanapali resorts.
- The Lahaina Bypass extension would connect the current endpoint at Keawe Street to Kāʻanapali’s Kakaʻalaneo Drive, allowing visitors to bypass Lahaina traffic and drive directly to resorts
- Project costs have increased from $70 million to $200 million with new potential funding sources identified
- Other proposed projects include a new Bicycle and Pedestrian Program with bike lane improvements on Main Street and Puʻunēnē Street
- Two Hāna Highway bridge projects are also proposed: Kupukoi Stream Bridge rehabilitation and Honomanu Bridge replacement east of Kaumahina State Wayside Park
