Multiple Maui news outlets reported that the Maui County Department of Fire and Public Safety has released official guidance ahead of the Fourth of July holiday, covering where and when fireworks will be sold, legal use hours, and safety reminders. Consumer fireworks sales run June 29 through July 4 at designated tent locations, and residents must follow strict rules to avoid fines or felony charges.
- Consumer fireworks will be sold June 29–July 4 (until 8 p.m.) at tent locations in Walmart Kahului, Safeway Maui Lani Wailuku, and Safeway Kihei parking lots — retail stores will NOT sell firecrackers or permits (KITV)
- Legal hours to set off fireworks are 1–9 p.m. on July 4 only; violations outside those hours carry fines up to $2,000
- No permit is required for consumer fireworks (sparklers, snakes, cone fountains) that emit effects no higher than 12 feet
- Aerial fireworks are illegal without a permit; importing, selling, or using them is a Class C Felony
- Fireworks are prohibited within 500 feet of any hotel without a permit, and within 1,000 feet of healthcare facilities or animal facilities
- Fireworks are also banned on public roads, in county parks, at county facilities, in cane fields, near schools, and at places of worship
- Minors may not possess, purchase, or set off fireworks unless under immediate adult supervision with parental or guardian permission
- Sparklers can burn at 2,000 degrees Fahrenheit and should not be given to young children (Maui News)
