The Maui County Council unanimously approved spending up to $278,000 in federal CDBG funds to purchase a Honokōwai condo unit for its Nā Hale Kūpuna program, which provides permanent housing for seniors displaced by the 2023 Lahaina wildfires. The program currently houses 10 people across eight units and has roughly 60 households on its waiting list.
- The county will acquire a one-bedroom unit at Maui Lani Terraces on Lower Honoapiʻilani Road for up to $278,000 using federal Community Development Block Grant funds.
- The Nā Hale Kūpuna program, managed by the J. Walter Cameron Center, currently serves 10 seniors in 8 units with approximately 60 households on the waiting list.
- More than half of those on the waiting list remain in FEMA temporary housing, and about 90% earn at or below 50% of the area median income.
- The county has roughly $1.3 million remaining in CDBG funds to acquire two or three additional units, with a preference for properties in Lahaina.
- Monthly HOA fees on the new unit are $635 and cover water, sewer, rubbish, and Wi-Fi, but not electricity.
