A private resort group and a Maui nonprofit are pursuing a large-scale beach rebuilding project at Kaanapali, using offshore sand to widen areas that have narrowed over time. The proposal is still in state review with no confirmed construction date.
- The Kaanapali Operations Association and Pilikahakai Foundation plan to move roughly 75,000 cubic yards of offshore sand to rebuild eroded sections of Kaanapali Beach.
- The south end near Hanakaoo Point and the Hyatt Regency is the most severely eroded stretch, while areas near the Sheraton and Black Rock have fared better.
- The project is currently under state DLNR review and no construction start date has been announced, so near-term guest disruption is not expected.
- The proposal follows emergency erosion repairs made earlier this year after a March storm damaged the beachwalk near the Hyatt Regency.
- Guests staying in different parts of Kaanapali may have noticeably different beach experiences depending on their proximity to the most affected southern areas.
