The University of Hawaii’s Center for Oral History has received four grants totaling $538,000 to document Lahaina wildfire experiences, water history, and women’s histories on Maui. Projects will produce hundreds of recorded interviews and digital archives through 2029.
- The largest grant — $250,000 from the Maui Strong Fund — will fund up to 100 hours of recorded interviews with Lahaina residents about their wildfire experiences.
- A $159,000 NEH grant will capture 30 interviews on Maui’s water history, with 20 focused on West Maui and Lahaina fire survivors.
- A $100,000 Digital Justice Grant will preserve histories of women of color on Maui through an accessible online platform.
- All four projects are framed as contributing to Maui’s long-term cultural recovery and community resilience following the 2023 wildfires.
