A Maui County Council committee unanimously approved a bill authorizing a water infrastructure agreement with the Department of Hawaiian Home Lands to develop three new groundwater wells in Waiʻōhuli. The project would supply up to 1.7 million gallons per day to support construction of more than 1,000 homestead lots across Central Maui.
- The Water and Infrastructure Committee voted 7-0 to advance Bill 97 (2026) to the full County Council for final consideration.
- Three new wells in Waiʻōhuli would have a combined capacity of 1,728,000 gallons per day, connected to Maui County’s Central Maui water system.
- The water supply would unlock over 1,000 currently paper-leased homestead lots and eventually serve an estimated 2,880 residential units.
- DHHL will be responsible for permits and funding, while the county will review plans, inspect work, and assist with permit approvals.
- The project is intended to address a statewide DHHL waitlist of 9,380 Maui-linked applicants with an average age over 60.
