Hawaiian Electric has begun installing Tesla Megapack battery units at its new Waena energy storage facility in Central Maui. The 40-MW system is designed to shift renewable energy to peak demand periods and is expected to go online in 2027.
- The Waena Battery Energy Storage System will be Maui’s first standalone load-shifting battery project, using 54 Tesla Megapack units along Pulehu Road.
- The 40-MW, 160-MWh system will store excess solar and wind energy during the day and release it to the grid at night when demand is higher.
- Six of the 54 battery units have been installed so far, with remaining units arriving in phases over the coming months.
- The project includes grid-forming technology to help stabilize Maui’s electrical grid as renewable energy use grows.
- The system is expected to enter service in 2027, supporting Hawaiian Electric’s goal of 100% renewable electricity generation by 2045.
