A proposal to restore eroding Kaanapali Beach by redistributing 75,000 cubic yards of offshore sand has entered the state permitting process. If approved, construction could begin fall 2027.
- The Pilikahakai Foundation and Ka’anapali Operations Association filed an application with the state Office of Conservation and Coastal Lands to restore the beach to its approximate 1988 profile.
- The project requires additional approvals including a Special Management Area permit and a public hearing before the Maui Planning Commission.
- About 75,000 cubic yards of sand would be redistributed along the shoreline from Pu’u Keka’a to Hanakao’o Beach Park using a barge.
- Kaanapali Beach Resort generates roughly $3 billion annually in gross revenues and supports thousands of jobs in West Maui.
- The proposal was revised over two years of community input, reducing sand volume by 20% and adding cultural monitors, reef-safe landscaping, and independent water-quality monitoring.
