The Lahaina Restoration Foundation and County of Maui are hosting a free hands-on kalo planting workshop on Aug. 22 at the historic Apuakehau site on Front Street — the first planting there since the 2023 wildfire. Space is limited to 15 participants and advance registration is required.
- The free Kalo Workshop takes place Aug. 22, 9–11:30 a.m., at the Lahaina Kalo Patch on Front Street; registration is required at LahainaRestoration.org.
- The event marks the first replanting of the three kalo patches since they were destroyed in the 2023 Lahaina fire.
- Participants will learn about kalo’s cultural history, plant huli in all three patches, and take home a young kalo plant with supplies.
- The workshop is open to families, with West Maui residents especially encouraged; capacity is capped at 15 people.
- The project is funded in part by the National Trust for Historic Preservation and supports broader cultural landscape restoration in Lahaina.
