Maui County is gathering public feedback on a proposed 25-mile multiuse trail along the West Maui coast that would connect communities from Ukumehame to Līpoa Point. A virtual meeting was held June 26, with comments accepted through July 24.
- The West Maui Greenway would run 25 miles along the coast, reusing old cane haul roads and a railroad right-of-way to link towns, beaches, schools, and parks.
- Phase 1 covers roughly 5.25 miles connecting the Lahaina Civic Center to Launiupoko Beach Park, funded by a $15.43 million federal RAISE grant.
- The trail is designed to also serve as an emergency evacuation route and potential firebreak, a priority reinforced by the 2023 Lahaina wildfire.
- Public comments on the environmental assessment can be submitted via the project’s Konveio page through July 24.
- The environmental assessment will determine final design, permitting, and utility relocation requirements before construction can proceed.
